Chronology of Negotiations

Negotiations between the University of Illinois Chicago and the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO Local 6297), the union that represents approximately 2,000 teaching, research and graduate assistants, and certain visiting teaching associates, began in April 2025. By mutual agreement and in standard practice, negotiations first focused solely on resolving the non-economic issues identified by the parties.  

From April 23, 2025, to Feb. 25, 2026, 21 bargaining sessions were held between UIC and GEO. Session 22, held on March 20, 2026, was the first with the independent federal mediator. Thus far, 15 sessions have been held with the federal mediator.  

Throughout these negotiations, both directly between the parties and with the mediator's support, the university has worked diligently to reach a fair and fiscally responsible contract without disrupting the teaching and learning environment at UIC.

To date, the university and the union have reached tentative agreements on 23 of 27 contract articles. Two primary economic issues, wages and healthcare, remain unresolved. 

On May 14, UIC and GEO reached a memorandum of understanding to suspend the strike that began on April 27. Collective bargaining will continue as the university and the union pursue agreements on four outstanding articles under negotiation.

The next negotiation, scheduled for July 14, will be the 45th session overall.
